If you like Celtic music, enjoy the rhythms of great Salsa, have a soft spot for jazz and enjoy live performances by La Bottine Souriante, you will not want to miss this special concert of Salsa Celtica, a truly amazing 10-piece band from Scotland that has rocked the charts throughout Europe and the USA.

Fusing fiery exuberant Afro-Cuban rhythms with the whirl and skirl of Scottish bagpipes and fiddles, and peppering it with jazz, Salsa Celtica have carved out their own musical niche, and are arguably one of Scotland's most popular live bands.

Instruments played include Celtic mainstays such as bagpipes, flute, whistle and fiddles alongside Afro-Cuban percussion such as timbales, congas and bongos. Add to this: trumpets, saxophones, banjo, guitar, piano and vocals, and you have Salsa Celtica!

Each one of the musicians is extraordinarily talented in his own right, including Éamonn Coyne, a tenor banjo player from Ireland who also plays mandolin and guitars and multi-instrumentalist Fraser Fifield from Scotland, to name just a few.

Since it's a week night, the concert will start early (at 7 pm; doors open at 6:30) and end by 10 pm.

The Tannahill Weavers In Concert

Tuesday, April 12, at La Sala Rosa

Scottish traditional music at its best!

This band's potent mixture of traditional ballads and fiery instrumentals leaves their audiences spellbound!

From the Highlanders' mystical Celtic music to the Lowlanders' rollicking Anglo-Scots tunes, the Tannahill Weavers' diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, and traditional ballads and lullabies, demonstrating to old and young alike the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people.

Their arrangements blend the beauty of traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms... and the penetrating sound of the Highland bagpipes is a thread of ancient memory running through it all. "An especially eloquent mixture of the old and the new." - New York Times

The variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits.

As tight and versatile as any band in the Celtic music scene, this dynamic quintet can summon rock-n-roll intensity or haunting introspection. With 16 albums to their credit, they have received worldwide accolades consistently over the years for their exuberant performances and outstanding recording efforts that seemingly can't get better...yet continue to do just that.

In 2001, the group was joined by Colin Melville, one of Scotland's hottest young pipers. The combination of powerful pipe solos, driving guitar and ethereal flute playing breathes new life into Scotland's vast repertoire of traditional melodies and songs.

"...the Tannies are the best that Scotland can aspire to (and believe me, that is THE BEST)." - The Living Tradition

  - IRISH AND QUEBECOIS MUSIC: INFLUENCES AND DEVELOPMENTS

If you have ever had an interest in Irish musical culture, here is a once-in-lifetime opportunity.

One of Ireland's most gifted traditional musicians, flute player DESI WILKINSON, will teach a course at Concordia's Centre for Canadian Irish Studies, beginning in two weeks. The course, IRISH AND QUEBECOIS MUSIC: INFLUENCES AND DEVELOPMENTS, will be offered on Mon and Wed evenings, 6.30-9.00pm, from May 3 to June 16. The course is open to the public but you must register.

Here are a few words from Desi's description of the course: "Our musical journey will commence with the music and songs of the perceived insular Celts and then we will take a look at the Breton tradition before crossing the Atlantic to 'explore connections'. Regional repertories in song and music will be dealt with in a practical way - learn to sing a song or two, play a tune or two."

Desi Wilkinson's solo albums and those with the group Cran have received rapturous reviews. He has performed with most of the best-known musicians and groups in the Irish music scene, like Dé Dannan, Liam O'Flynn and Andy Irvine, at venues around the world, most recently at Washington's Kennedy Centre.

For further information on the course and how to register, contact the Centre for Canadian Irish at 848-8711. But you need to do so as soon as possible.
